Nesil Caliskan, the Labour MP for Barking, has introduced a Bill in Parliament aimed at strengthening training on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) for teachers and school staff across England.
The Bill calls for the evaluation of SEND training in Initial Teacher Education and proposes mandatory ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in SEND for teachers and school staff.
Nesil Caliskan MP, Member of Parliament for Barking, said: “Every child deserves an inclusive education, supported by teachers and staff who understand their needs and have the skills to help them thrive.”
“I brought this Bill to Parliament because too many children in my constituency are being let down by a broken national system. Schools are doing their best, but many teachers feel ill-equipped to support children with SEND.
“One teacher who attended my coffee morning for parents and teachers in Barking and Dagenham described receiving just a ‘four-hour seminar’ and then being told to ‘get on with it’.”
“Teachers want to support all students, including those with SEND, and my Bill will ensure during their teacher training and throughout their career, they will be equipped to do so.”
The Bill will have its Second Reading on Friday 12th September where MPs will have the opportunity to debate the substance of the proposals.
